Tutorials

19 Oct

Today I went on a search for illustrator tutorials on new ways to colour things. I found a few that weren’t really what I was looking for, but seemed like a lot of fun anyway. So I did those, and I think it has given me some ideas on stuff to try (brushes, lots and lots of brushes, also overlays and crap) for my next project that is colour intensive. What I liked about these is it gave me more of a heads-up in photoshop, although I still had way to much trouble trying to figure out how to rotate type (CMD + T). I need to get better at that, so it looks like more tutorials for me in the future!

I also don’t know why the second one turned out so neon green when I uploaded it to the internets. It’s a lot more dull in the photoshop file. I will have to check that out too.

trace!

16 Oct

For most of my silly “drawings” they are just manual computer traces using a certain pen tool in illustrator over an existing photo. Since I started doing them, they haven’t really changed at all. I mean, they are just tracing photos right? How complex can it get? But since I’ve started taking my drawing class, I have been noticing my tracing skills increase dramatically. I understand perspective at least a little bit now, which gives them much more feeling to them, and the subtle flows in clothing is becoming easier to sort out as well, and make look good on the glowing screen. There is a quick example of one I am working on now. I’m liking it so far. My next biggest challenge is finding new ways to work with colour to incorporate lighting and shading. Dual tones in the same plane for example.

I wonder how my teacher would feel if I’m using the techniques being taught and applying them to tracing?

What?

I am thoroughly ashamed and assure everyone that I do not actually have feelings. Also, this was a dare.

Tablet Test

14 Sep

I recently picked up a small Wacom Bamboo tablet. Until now, I haven’t had much chance to try it out, so I decided to do just that, instead of read a textbook that tried to link communication theory to a terrible movie starring Jodie Foster. Jodie Foster is awful.

Here is what I got

It needs work, but I like it. The text was done with the tablet, by way of a reference to an existing typeface. The image picture, of the very frightened Mr. Quinlan was done much the same way. I found doing the facial features and especially hair was much easier and faster with this beauty Wacom made for me. Alright. Oh, here is the original photo, in case anyone is interested,

he is, um, grim. Long story. Sorry Jacob.

Anyway, any thoughts, let me know.
